Shipping Time and Costs
Goodbye has been a New Zealand business since 1999. After years of sending parcels on e-mail inquiry to people who’d found our product here in NZ, in 2010 we set up an on-line shop to make things easier on all of us. Since then, we’ve been shipping product to all kinds of surprising (to us) places.
We do our best to get your order to you as quickly as possible, please allow for the following: For NZ customers, please allow 3 working days for delivery. (Allow 1-2 extra days for Rural Delivery.) Orders are despatched via CourierPost. If they are small, we'll send them "No Signature Required" so that they are easy to get at home. If they are larger, you may be required to sign on receipt, or take a card to the post office to retrieve.
For International customers, please allow 10-15 working days. Orders are despatched via tracked and insured service depending on the location, and you may be required to sign on receipt.
We cannot guarantee delivery by a particular date. If you are going away, please allow sufficient time or arrange an alternative address for your order to be delivered.
Orders under 30 NZD are charged at 6 NZD shipping (inc. GST) Orders of 30 NZD and over receive free shipping
Small orders with a big shipping charge just don’t make sense to anyone. Make your order big enough to be worthwhile, our products make great gifts.
Australia: Orders under 80 AUD are charged 20 AUD for tracked courier. Orders above this receive free shipping.
Asia Pacific Region: Orders under 150 NZD are charged 35 NZD for tracked courier. Orders above this receive free shipping.
Europe including UK: Duties and Taxes Paid Tracked Courier is 150 NZD.
Canada: All orders charged a flat rate of 80 NZD (~70 CAD) to cover entry fee, duties and taxes paid as well as courier.
USA: Orders under 75 USD are charged 30 NZD (~20 USD) for tracked courier. Orders above this receive free shipping.
Rest of World: Orders are charged 70 NZD
International courier costs from NZ sometimes make it difficult to justify the cost particularly for smaller orders. It really only makes sense when you want enough product.
We regularly review our shipping options and providers to enable us to offer best available shipping to our Customers.
We have tried cheaper options, but end up disappointing customers with long wait times, lost packages and customer service email threads that make us cry. We use tracked courier services so that we can get the most reliable and timely service to you.
We want to make getting our products as easy as we are able, and subsidise shipping for larger orders as soon as financially possible.
All orders within NZ include GST.
International orders are Exempt from GST, however some countries may incur an import or duty tax.
As the customer, aside from countries that we note that duties and taxes are paid, you are responsible for payment of any import or duty charges applied for the parcel to reach you.
For Canada, UK and Europe, we opt to pay duties and taxes along with the shipping charge.
Please check if you are concerned, so that you won’t be disturbingly surprised.
Most packages go via a tracked service, and you will receive an e-mail with your tracking number. If you need help chasing it down, please contact us at email@example.com
Please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org within 7 days of delivery with details of the damage, and photos. We will endeavour to resolve the matter as quickly as possible, either by refunding or immediately replacing the items depending on the situation. Ensure you retain the packaging and the damaged item(s) until we’ve resolved the issue.
We accept no responsibility if your order cannot be delivered if you are not home or if you have supplied us with incorrect or incomplete address details. Our service will do their best to get your parcel to you, but if it fails to find you, it will return the product to us adding another shipping charge. At this point, we will calculate the price you paid for the product less the actual shipping it cost to get it to you and back to us. If the product is worth less than the sum of the shipping, we will not refund any of your order. If the product is worth more than the shipping, we will refund the difference to you. Knowing this, check the address you give us carefully, and make sure someone is ready to find it when the delivery service leaves a card for pickup.
Please allow one week for NZ and three weeks for International delivery. If your order hasn't arrived in 10 working days, we put a track on it from our side to try to see what's happening. If it's been 10 working days, you can contact us at email@example.com
Please contact us immediately at firstname.lastname@example.org if you want to cancel your order. If your order has already been despatched, please ensure you return all items unopened and unused within 30 days. We recommend you return the goods via courier or registered post. We are not responsible for any damage or loss in transit to us, and will refund the price of the items only on receipt of the items in good condition. We will not refund any courier/delivery costs.
MOST of our shipments go just as planned…. you order, pay, we ship, it arrives, you’re happy. We’re happy.
If you are not happy with one of our products, contact us at email@example.com to let us know what's happening. Depending on the situation, we'll work out a return, replacement of refund to you.
For service, sometimes, things go pear-shaped with a courier service, especially in this Covid time. Again, depending on the situation, if a service has lost your package, we'll work out a return, replacement of refund to you.
If you have any questions anywhere along the way, you are most welcome to contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org
We’re real people who really care. As a family run business, with busy kids, and school-like office hours, it may take a day or so to get back to you.
If you’ve gotten an item that you are just not happy with, for any reason, let us know and return it to us within 30 days with a brief “WHY”. To begin the process, just contact us at email@example.com
We recommend you return the goods via courier or registered post, packed beautifully so that they arrive in good condition. On receipt of goods, we will refund the item amount plus the item’s shipping portion of the order.
Becoming a wholesale customer has several criteria, especially for international wholesale customers. Having said that, if you plan to order more than 750 USD in the online shop, please let us know and we’ll either direct you to a distributor, set up a wholesale account or custom quote your order.
In New Zealand about 700 shops carry Goodbye SANDFLY. It is the #1 selling natural bug repellent in NZ, and can be found in many sports stores, health shops, pharmacies, tourist shops and heaps of grocery stores: most Countdown, New World, PaknSave, Four Square, SuperValue and FreshChoice.
Goodbye OUCH is also in many health shops, pharmacies and grocery stores in New Zealand.
Every product on the shop has the batch and expiry date noted at the bottom of the product description. That way you know exactly what you will receive.
Once you receive them, our products are all labelled with a batch and expiry date. Our expiry dates are 30 months from manufacture, anything we ship will have at least 18 months until the best by date. We have bottles that are still good after 4 years, but it really depends on how they are handled in the sun and heat. They prefer cool and shade.
Once a product has been opened we recommend using within a year.
Yes, it does. Goodbye SANDFLY has been a product since 1999, and the best-selling natural repellent in New Zealand since 2009. It is a trusted product with thousands of very satisfied customers.
NO, it does not. And we can’t even tell you why. First up, aside from the fact that everyone is a different body chemistry and reactiveness to bug and bites, there’s variation in application styles, attentiveness to the skin, and the environment. This is why we encourage people to dress savvy, and keep your bug repellent for the skin that clothing does not cover. If you go to a picnic on the West Coast of New Zealand, none of the locals are sporting shorts and jandals.
Goodbye SANDFLY serves safely, both as a repellent and as a bite soother. As two products in one, it is a very unique product. Also, there’s no citronella, geranium, or rosemary, and no water, alcohol or preservatives. People like the smell and feel of the product. Because it’s water-free, it’s easy to carry in travel bags, purses and backpacks.
Goodbye SANDFLY is certified natural by NATRUE, a highly regarded designation for genuinely natural cosmetics. It’s one we are very proud to maintain. Goodbye SANDFLY is made of a base of Sweet Almond Oil with a combination of 6 essential oils, that’s it, nothing else. The essential oils are lavender, eucalyptus, pine, manuka, tea tree & lemongrass. Simple, yet very powerful.
Companies who offer water based products use the word “greasy” to scare you away from oil. Almond oil is a prized skin oil, known for its soothing and softening properties. It is absorbed by the skin well, allowing the skin to benefit from the nutrients in the oil. You do not need a lot of product to do the job.
That’s a bummer to feel like a product does not do what it is supposed to do, especially with a bug repellent. Goodbye SANDFLY does not work exactly like a chemical repellent. For one, it takes about 60 seconds for the heat of your body to begin evaporating the essential oils from your skin. 60 seconds is a long time if you’re being eaten. Also, especially at the beginning, it sometimes needs to be reapplied to build up enough smell to deter bugs. Goodbye SANDFLY is not a miracle product, it does a good job in a healthy way.
Yes, it works on mosquitoes. The difference with mosquitoes is that they do not quit hassling you at night. And, since Goodbye SANDFLY is a natural product that needs to be reapplied, it is not the best way to protect you at night. We recommend screens for windows or nets over beds to allow a peaceful, safe sleep.
Little bottles make it easy for people to have their repellent handy in their pockets or purse. The product is quite concentrated, and a little goes a long way.
Goodbye SANDFLY is a quality product that costs real money to make. It is essentially 100% useful to your body with NO water or fillers to make the product look bigger.
Yes, it is a very economical way to use Goodbye SANDFLY. You can do this by putting any larger size into the smaller carry sizes. AND, we are just beginning to build a refill network.
While we cannot tell you when it is absolutely safe to use this product on your baby, we can tell you that Goodbye SANDFLY has been formulated to be gentle. We recommend testing with a small application of product on the inside of your baby’s arm. Watch over a half an hour for any visible redness or irritation. If you notice anything, wash with warm soapy water and wait for a few months to try again. The best protection you can give a baby is to keep as much of that beautiful skin covered as possible.
We have no idea whether you can or not. Goodbye SANDFLY is a natural product, formulated to be gentle, but essential oils are powerful. In truth, anyone can be sensitive to any oil. In practice, we have heard of less than a handful of reactions to any of our products in over twenty years making these products. We recommend trialing a small amount of product on the inside of your elbow and watch for any reactions over a half hour period.
Yes, we recommend using the sunscreen first, then applying Goodbye SANDFLY. The almond oil does not make your skin more prone to burning and adds its own natural SPF of 2.
You can reuse older Sandfly bottles + products in several multi-use ways - e.g. as furniture polish, cutting board care, and treatment of any oiled wood surfaces. Read more about second life product uses on our Life Cycle page.
The term water-free (anhydrous) indicates there is no water in our sunscreen formulation. It’s an efficient way to create products, and naturally more stable. Water-free helps you get good coverage on your skin, as well as high water-resistance. Our anhydrous formulation has a unique skin feel that is lighter than you would expect from an oil, butter and beeswax base. Many of our ingredients have been selected to settle quickly into the skin to enhance skin barrier function, and deeply moisturize, and provide antioxidant support to your skin.
We recommend that you reapply Sun Balm every two hours, or after a swim or toweling off. You may want to apply more often on your lips. In addition to reapplying sunscreen regularly, we recommend wearing sensible clothing, a hat and sunglasses as they also protect your skin and eyes from the sun.
Our sunscreen does contain zinc, and for very good reasons. Zinc Oxide is generally recognised as the best single ingredient for broad spectrum coverage. The formulating of zinc oxide has progressed to allow for a more cosmetic look and feel. It is regarded as reef safe.
Sun Balm ageing depends on the packaging it comes in. For sunscreen in tubes, the use by date is 30 months from manufacture. The use by date will be noted on the seal at the top of the tube. For sunscreen in tins, we recommend using it within 6 months of opening, as the air has more access to the product. Because Sun Balm does not rely on chemical actives or staying mixed with water, it is naturally more stable and does not lose its effectiveness as quickly as some other sunscreens. We recommend using sunscreen within the use by date.
All of our natural ingredients have been selected for their skin benefits including skin soothing, moisture control and antioxidant richness. Antioxidants fight or neutralise Free Radicals which can cause skin damage including cell damage, photo-aging, and potentially skin cancer. You’ll feel the difference at the end of the day. Instead of feeling hot and dry from chemical actives, your skin will still feel moisturised and calm.
Chemicals like Oxybenzone are highly mobile and can spread far and wide by ocean currents. For us at Goodbye, protecting our waters (and nature) is a biggie. We wish to do our part and therefore, Goodbye OUCH Sun Balm does not have ANY of these chemicals. Learn more about these damaging ingredients by clicking here.
Our sun balm has been tested at SPF 50 which provides 2HRS water resistance and at SPF4 and which provides 4HRS water resistance. We are extremely proud of this and this is one of the reasons why we manufacture and sell SPF40 and SPF50 sunscreen. Our unique anhydrous (water-free) formula has a lot to do with those results, and gives you the best protection possible in a natural sunscreen.
Yes you can! The rich organic oils and butters our Sun Balm contains, give variation in texture and help it melt smoothly and evenly on your skin and lips. All of our ingredients have been selected for their skin benefits including skin soothing, moisture control and antioxidant richness. This one product for the day suits many men too!
Yes, our sunscreen has a high water-resistance and has been tested all the way up to 4 hours. That’s the gift of being a water-free sunscreen, it doesn’t want to mix with water. This means you can sweat and swim and your sunscreen will stay in place doing its job, instead of running into your eyes and accumulating in waterways. Re-applying sun balm every 2 hours, or when coming out of the water and after towel drying, is highly recommended.
This is normal and does not affect performance or how it feels when you apply it. Our natural sunscreen has cocoa butter in it, which has a desire to hug together when it gets cool (maybe for warmth!) and changes the surface look of the sunscreen. As long as your sunscreen is still in date, and hasn’t been opened longer than 6 months to a year, it is fine to use it. If you are not sure about the date or length of use, you can visit our Life Cycle page to do a colour test.
By including Zinc Oxide in our sunscreen products, our natural formula offers the best range of broad spectrum protection of any UV filter, other than good clothing (which is why we also recommend for you to wear comfortable, protective clothes and a hat in the high sun hours).
It’s important because while it’s the UVB (think UVBurn) that gives the burning part of too much sun, but it’s the UVA that can cause the most damage to skin. If you wear a sunscreen that only protects from the burn, but not the damage, you can actually have a bigger problem than if you’d worn no sunscreen at all. That’s not good! All sunscreens manufactured in Australia and NZ must now meet the AS/NZS sunscreen standard, which includes good broad spectrum UVA protection. All sunscreens manufactured in Australia and NZ must now meet the AS/NZS sunscreen standard, which includes good broad spectrum UVA protection. However, other overseas countries for example the US mandate a lower UVA requirement than in Australia and New Zealand.
Sun Balm sunscreen meets the ASNZ 2604:2012, which includes broad-spectrum coverage. Goodbye has been tested for critical wavelength, which is the UVA or part of the broad spectrum coverage in a sunscreen. ASNZ 2604: 201 has the highest requirement for Broad Spectrum coverage in the world. It not only requires that the skin is protected at a certain spectrum of UVA, but that it is balanced to the coverage of the UVB. Sun Balm passes this critical wavelength and protection factor test.
You absolutely can, as our sun products only contain natural ingredients and no chemicals like Oxybenzone. SPF40 or SPF50 provides high-performance protection and coverage for any age and all of the family. We recommend that you patch test on the inside of the elbow and wait for 20 minutes to check for any skin irritation, before applying this sunscreen for protection for the first time.
With our sunscreens such as Sustainable Sunscreen Kit with a refillable two-tin system, we aim to lessen the use of plastics for our sun products. Each year New Zealanders purchase over one million sunscreen items from supermarkets in New Zealand.* With our aluminium packaging, you can re-use and refill, then recycle accordingly. Also with water-free formula sunscreen, you only need a small amount to cover your face, body & lips day after day. *data from Aztec-IRI supermarkets 2020
For us Sustainable is measure in the product ingredients, the quality and ethos of the sunscreen itself as well as the packaging system that has a refill, recycle and/or circularity to it.
Here’s every ingredient in our Sun Balm product, in the correct order, with common name and INCI name, nothing left out. Because you SHOULD know what is in a product
At Goodbye, we are proud to say our sunscreen products are certified natural by NATRUE. We chose to undergo NATRUE’s audit process, which is administered here in New Zealand by BioGro, because they are the most stringent natural cosmetics certification in the world. NATRUE gives us an umbrella to tell our story in connection to other businesses that have made this same commitment. For you as a consumer, NATRUE perhaps gives you some reassurance if you see their logo, that our sunscreen products have passed a rigorous examination process, and are genuinely natural.
The UV index is a free service provided by Niwa that predicts and records Ultraviolet (UV) radiation for different locations in New Zealand. This index is a tool for understanding the speed at which burning can occur. This is more useful than how “hot” it is outdoors, as there may be a very cool wind on the face, and yet the UV index quite high, which means burning time will be shorter than it feels like it would be. It is recommended that you wear sunscreen anytime the UV index is 4 and above, or when you will be outdoors for a long period of time. You can access the UV index here.
For Sun Balm, plan on 6 to 12 months of fresh product from opening. On our Life Cycle page, we have put together a handy colour guide on how to compare your tins and tell the age of sun balm products by the LOOK and SMELL.
Our natural sunscreen can change texture, we call it "goose bumps" when it gets cold. This does not look particularly fabulous in the tin, but does not affect performance or skin feel. Cocoa butter has six crystal structures, and when it gets cold it starts to change it's structure, making goose bumps. You don't need to do anything to fix this, but if the look bothers you, put your tin in a hot car for a couple of hours and the warmth will smooth the surface again.
If your sun balm has gotten "older" (more than a year since opening) but it still has good colour and smells nice, you can re-purpose the balm in a variety of second life uses - e.g. as deodorant, lip + blister soother, and red baby bottom balm. Read more about second life product uses on our Life Cycle page.
If we haven't quite covered it, and you have a question or comment please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
We’re a small team of real people based in Northland, New Zealand and make every effort to answer your product and useage questions.
